Lawn Care Tips for March (and April)

March is an important month if you want your lawn to look great from summer

Here are some actions to get your lawn ready:

1. Mow

  • “If it’s growing start mowing”

  • Your first cut of the year should be with your mower set at maximum height.

  • Only cut one-third (or less) of the grass height at once, to avoid stressing the grass.

  • Ensure your lawnmower has sharp blades.

2. Moss

  • “I’ve never seen so much moss”

  • Iron sulphate solution will dehydrate it and is best applied when the moss is damp.

  • Rake or scarify to remove the dehydrated moss (we have the best kit for this).

  • Good news – we’re currently offering FREE moss treatment for customers of annual plans.

3. Aerate

  • “Best when the ground is damp but firm (not sodden)”

  • Improves drainage and root health.

  • Professional machines provide deep aeration for the best results.

Below are 3 more actions to consider, but don’t rush... you may want to wait a few more weeks for these. The Lawn Professionals are happy to review your lawn and advise what is best:

4. Feed

  • “Please don’t just throw down whatever you find in the shed”

  • It’s important to balance the nutrients across the year – grass can have too much of a good thing.

  • We offer a balanced programme with a range of feeds, including organic slow-release options.

5. Weed

  • “Timing is key – they should be actively growing”

  • Professional selective treatments remove weeds without damaging the grass.

  • Responsible application keeps the environmental impact to a minimum.

6. Renovate

  • “Wait for it, wait for it…”

  • A full scarify, aeration, overseed and topdress can work wonders in the spring.

  • But timing is key. Scarify when it’s too wet and you can make a real mess.

  • Plus, warmer soil will improve seed germination and new grass growth.
